Li Zengguo: The City 3

Looking back on those paintings that accompanied me in my studio night and day the past few years, I feel a hint of sentiment. For lost dreams, with nostalgic longing for my hometown far away, regret on unrealized fantasies. But always expecting and hopeful.

The blank or blurred faces in my paintings bring forward their bodies and what the bodies have to convey; the exaggeratedly detailed background in contrast lay stages for the main spirit’s poetic existence. My recent paintings expanded on the themes. The gray tones give the paintings a feeling of profundity and disquiet. From the lost individuals to the wandering crows; from solemn sitting and pondering to wandering exile, the spirit and the soul roam between reality and free expression of art.
