Zhang Qikai was born in Shehong, Sichuan in 1950. His family moved to Chongqing when he was three. Zhang attended Tamatsi University of Fine Arts in Japan in 1987. During his three years in Japan, Zhang had several solo exhibitions and participated in large group exhibitions. He also won international art awards and the Tokyo Art Committee Art Award. He was on the judges committee of the Japanese International Artists’ Association.
Zhang moved to Germany in 1990 and became an active member in the Berlin art community. His work was collected by the German government, cultural institutes, art museums and private collectors.
In 2000, Zhang returned to China and had a solo exhibition in Shanghai Art Museum. He has been diligently working on Eastern and Western cultural exchange and education. He has written a lot as an art critic as well.
ART ACTIVITIES:
Initiated and organized the “Weed Society” with friends in 1980, one of Chinese first art societies.
Planned and organized the “International Long March – Across Europe” art movement in 2002.
Planned and organized “Art Basel – Moving Files International Installation” in Shanghai and Chongqing in 2006.
Published “Western Visual Art – Art Basel” in 2007.
Solo exhibition at Marlborough Gallery in London in 2008.
